Energy: Electrostatic Potential Energy
That is also why the density of solid iodine is the highest followed by that of liquid and then gaseous iodine. In general then gaseous state of a substance contains the most potential energy, followed by the liquid state, and then the solid state. And also that for a substance, the gaseous state of a substance is the least dense, followed by the liquid state and then the solid state, with the one single exception: that of water and ice!
