Core Energetics: Enthalpy
Slide 13 of 34
Energy Transfer: Heat
–This process continues on until the excess kinetic energy possessed by the atoms in the kettle and water molecules have been transferred to the air particles
–Until the kinetic energies are equal, in other words, until the temperature of the kettle and the water has dropped to room temperature.
The sum total of kinetic and chemical potential energy in a substance is called the total energy of the substance.
And from here onwards, when mention is made of the energy of a substance, total energy (sum of kinetic and chemical potential energy) is to be understood.
Additionally, from here onwards, heat, energy and enthalpy will often be used interchangeably.
–For the purposes of IB Diploma Chemistry, the three terms are equivalent.
