Basic Oxygen Process: Removal of carbon
Carbon is removed from molten cast iron by bubbling oxygen through it in a tilting furnace.
In less than an hour 350 tonnes of molten iron can be converted to steel using this method.
Tilting furnace
The oxygen reacts with the carbon in preference to the iron
because carbon is more reactive.
Other impurities such as sulfur is also oxidized to sulfur dioxide.
