Since
oxygen atoms travel around in pairs, we must end up with two oxygen
atoms in the number of units of the compound produced.

in the equation a molecule of oxygen is shown to produce two units of
sodium oxide.
Accounting for the number of oxygen atoms has
meant the creation of sodium atoms.
